More Shrubs A Splurge Of Spring

By Keith Markensen

If you have room in your garden for more shrubs and want a splurge of spring color, grow some of the named hybrid brooms, which are handled by several nurseries in the Fog Belt. They do well in this area. Try to see the brooms in bloom before making your choice, for they vary in color, size and vigor.

Some flower as early as March, but the peak of bloom is in April and May. One cool year my bushes (mostly grown from seed) began to blossom late in January and wound up with scattered flowers in August. At that time most of them were heavy with black seed pods.

Take a look at Dorothy Walpole. a May-blooming broom which is quite distinctive with its 3- to 7-inch spikes of dainty red and purple flowers. Geofiry Skipwith, one of the earliest to bloom, has a creamy pink banner and keel and dark crimson wings. Pomona, orange and apricot, is a powerful grower and should be placed at a distance from other plants or it will crowd out weaker neighbors. St. Mary, which is lower than the average broom, is delightful when covered with white bloom. McGill is a redand-white dwarf.

Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys

The lily-turfs, Liriope muscari and its varieties and Mondo (Ophiopogon) jaburan, are adapted to the Big Valley garden in shade and borders where the sun is not too strong. The roots spread by means of stolons, often becoming sod; the evergreen foliage resembles coarse grass and is sometimes variegated.

The small, drooping flowers, carried in quantity close to the stem, may be violet-blue, lilac or white. You can find these plants in at least one California nursery. Liriope muscari and L spicata are only about 8 inches high; L. grandiflora and Mondo jaburan are much taller.

Pacific Northwest

You can improve the quality of next year's flowering bulbs by applying fertilizer now. Old manure is a good mulch; phosphates and potash are particularly needed to help bulbs store up food while they are in active growth.

In making up your list of summer bulbs, don't forget two that are so tender that they must he taken up in the fall: ismene (Hymeno. callis calathina), from tropical America. and Mexican tuberose (Polianthese tuberosa), which is called a tuberose because of its tubers, not because it looks like a rose. Ismene bears large spicily fragrant flowers which resemble cream-colored daffodils. It should be planted between the middle of May and the middle of July. See that the bulb is planted 6 inches deep in rich soil in a sunny location and do not let it dry out. As for the Mexican tuberose, you can hurry the bloom along by potting up the bulbs late this month and keeping them in the house until they can be set out in May. The fragrant white flowers, which may be single or double, are carried on tall stems.

Jets Top Giants In Preseason Meadowlands Battle

By Ross Everett

A week after being named the New York Jets starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez rewarded his first year NFL coach with a victory. Rex Ryan got his first win as coach of the Jets as his team nipped the rival New York Giants 27-25. Both teams are now 1-2 in NFL preseason play.

NFL preseason betting enthusiasts who took the Giants as +3 point underdogs were rewarded with the outright victory. The Jets improved to 2-1 against the pointspread, while the Giants dropped to 1-2 against the money as they dropped their second straight ATS verdict.

Sanchez finished with 149 yards on 13 of 20 passing and a touchdown pass. After the game, he was pleased the victory:

"You get a little more confidence when you know your coach believes in you and has named you the starter. It was similar to that at SC. Once you're the guy, you talk a little different, you walk a little different and you act a little different."

Giants defender Mathias Kiwanuka thought he had a sack but Sanchez evaded him and another lineman to make the play. He had to be impressed with Sanchezs touchdown effort:

"I thought we had him. It was a great play. You have to give him credit for seeing down the field with two guys in his face."

Sanchez gave his version of the scoring play:

"It was one of those plays where you get hit throwing it and you don't really see what's going on. You kind of listen. I knew if it was a big roar, it was probably a big play by the Giants, maybe an interception and I'd have to get up quick. But I heard a quiet roar and I said: 'Oh boy, I think he caught it.'"

Winning coach Ryan commended his young QBs effort:

"He was poised. He is what we thought he was."

Giants QB Eli Manning finished with 91 yards on 9 of 21 passing with a touchdown and interception. He also had receiver Steve Smith drop a wide open pass that would have gone for a touchdown. Afterwards, he sympathized with his receiver:

"Sometimes it's good to get those out of the way now. I know Steve feels bad about that. He hasn't done that all training camp. I know he won't drop it next time."

The Giants will get the NFL regular season started with a big game against their divisional rivals as they host the Washington Redskins on Sunday, September 13th. The Jets will start the season on the road as they travel to Houston for a game against the Texans.

How to Unfreeze Your Water Pipelines

By Adriana Noton

For many homeowners living in a region that has cold winters, sometimes they will have to deal with frozen water pipes. Fortunately, if you are a homeowner who has pipes that are at risk of freezing, you do not have to panic if you come home some day to find them frozen. There are number of methods to help you easily unfreeze your pipes. The following is a list of tips on how to unfreeze your water pipelines:

1. A high power hair dryer is the most common and safest method of unfreezing frozen water pipes. You just have to move the hair dryer back and forth over the frozen section to thaw the pipe. The faucet should be open to allow the water to start dripping. As well, a heat lamp is a popular choice to thawing pipes. These lamps produce a lot of heat so make sure any exposed wall area is protected using metal sheet such as a baking sheet.

2. You can use an electric portable space heater to thaw your water pipes. A portable heater is effective if you can fit it in the space near the pipe since the amount of heat produced is not that powerful. However, it does take a while to thaw a frozen pipe. The best place to use a space heater to thaw pipes is in places that are enclosed such as under a kitchen sink. You just have to fit the space heater in the enclosed space and turn it on. It heats the area and the pipe which then thaws the pipe. You should never leave the home and allow the heater to keep running.

3. There is a device called a 'piping hot' machine that uses two clamps that you attach to the frozen pipe. When the machine is in use it heats the pipe area between the two clamps. You can usually rent a 'piping hot' machine from a plumbing supplier or some plumbers. They can also be purchased.

4. Electric Pipe Heat Tape can be used to thaw water pipes. All that you have to do is wrap the pipe with the tape and plug the end into an outlet and the tape will heat and thaw the frozen water pipe. As a plumber might tell you, the tape is also useful to prevent the pipes from freezing.

5. Using a heat gun is an effective way to unfreeze the water pipes. You just have to aim the heat gun on the frozen section of the pipe and move it back and forth so that heat spreads over the frozen section. This method can take a while to thaw the pipe.

If you have pipes that are exposed to the cold, chances are they will freeze if not properly protected. You can reduce the chances of having your pipes freeze if you insulate your pipes using insulation tape. Before you actually start thawing the pipes, you should shut off the water line so that the pipe will not be under so much pressure when you thaw to prevent cracking and the pipe bursting.

One important consideration is the use of plumbers' torches to thaw pipes. There are always risks associated with using a plumber torch so you should know what you are doing when using the torch to thaw frozen water pipes. As well, plumber torches should only be used to thaw copper or a metal based pipe. If you are unsure about what you are doing, you should enlist the services of a professional plumber such as emergency plumbers in Toronto who have the knowledge and experience to unthaw your pipes without causing damage.

Tips for Natural Lawn and Garden Care

By Karen Moore

If you want to start getting involved with natural lawn and garden care the first step you are going to need to take is to find a natural lawn care product and even if one is advertised as being natural you are still going to want to read through the list of ingredients to make sure that it is all natural because some are listed as being so but are really not.

Basically the rule is that if you cannot pronounce an ingredient, it is not natural. You can also read reviews on a natural lawn and garden care product to learn more about it and decide whether or not it is going to be right for you.

Ideas

If you really want to offer natural lawn and garden care for the long term, there are a few ideas in particular that you are going to want to keep in mind. For one, you are going to want to mulch your grass clippings. This is completely natural and a great way to keep your grass and garden healthy.

You can make sure that you don't end up with a heavy layer of grass clippings on your lawn by using a mulching mower to chop up the grass clippings finely as you go along. This is very important because if there is a heavy layer of grass clippings left on the lawn it is going to basically smother the grass underneath and possibly end up killing it.

For proper natural lawn and garden care, you are going to want to make sure that you use all natural fertilizer as well. Compost also works very well, and not only will help your garden to strive but as well allows you to recycle. You can make your own compost simply by adding compostable materials.

This is a great natural lawn and garden care tip, and to make compost you want to use the right materials. This includes anything that was once living but remember that some items are best to be avoided such as meat, dairy and cooked food as it can attract vermin and so you do not want to home-compost these sorts of materials.

For best results, you want to use a mixture of types of ingredient. This way your compost will be the most effective, and bear in mind that the right balance is something that can really only be learnt by experience so as you continue to make compost you will get the hang of it.

Colts Look Sharp In NFL Preseason Win Over Eagles

By Ross Everett

The Indianapolis Colts offense was in high gear as Peyton Manning threw two TD passes in three series of action, leaving backup Curtis Painter with a 14-0 lead over the Philadelphia Eagles before exiting the game. The Colts would eventually depend as much on their defense as their offense over the course of the subsequent NFL season but on this day the Colts went on to win 23-15 in NFL preseason action at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Manning was in good spirits as he discussed the Colts' offense after this game:

"I think everybody wanted to be in there. The entire offense felt hungry after last week. Sure, there were some mistakes we can learn from, but there were some good things we can learn from."

"I don't think anybody offensively was really happy with what happened last week. It started with me and the entire offensive starting unit. Overall I thought everybody came back and did a better job tonight."

Colts head coach Jim Caldwell was likewise pleased with the performance:

"They [the starters] had a couple of real good solid drives in there, performing pretty well. We were pleased with what we saw."

Eagles coach Andy Reid wasn't the least bit enthused with what he saw from his team:

"All in all, that was an embarrassing performance and way too many penalties, not enough intensity all the way around, starting with me. It was a poor performance."

The Eagles were missing a number of starters and aside from a nice touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb early in the game looked nothing like a team expected to contend for a Superbowl berth. The Eagles would go on to choke mightily in the playoffs, an obvious karmic payback for signing unrepentant dog abuser Michael Vick. Vick was ineffectual all year, which made the hubris of bringing him into the fold even less understandable.

The Eagles will start the regular season with a road game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, September 13th while the Colts will host the Jacksonville Jaguars

Points To Consider When Starting A Renovation Project

By Jimmy Powell

Renovation project more often than not embody years of saving and planning. It is vital that you as the homeowner will allot some time in learning the tips that will ensure that your dream renovation project will go smoothly. According to Gary Nealon of AERO Construction, the following is a list of tips you can try on when you are planning for your home renovation.

1. Make a good communication with the remodeler. With an effective communication right from the beginning, you can be certain that troubles will be minimized. Be very keen on the attitude of your remodeler. Observe if he or she returns your calls quickly, pays attentions to your suggestions, and replies to your inquiries on the dot. A good contractor must be approachable. This will guarantee that both of you can manage problems together when they arise.

2. Select a contractor that has already built a good track record. Make sure that you have a faith in him. Working with somebody you are comfortable with makes a big difference.

3. Create a definite schedule for the project. With a properly laid out schedule, you will be able to monitor the progress of the project, whether it is still on time or delayed. Contingency plans can also be properly place into position with clear time line.

4. Require that everything that was agreed on be written. This will make things clear both for you and the contractor. By putting everything in a written proposal, you can ensure that your understanding and expectations meet that of your contractor.

5. Be very mindful of the small details. Make sure that you have clearly set things before the actual work starts.

6. Be flexible. As with most projects, you cannot exactly determine things unless the actual work is being done. Put leeways in your plans and expect that there will be interruptions as the work is progressing.

7. You must have a change management plan. You need to talk over with your contractor how both of you will handle changes that you may wish to apply such as putting your personal touches on the project. This must also be put into writing. This is very important, as any change you may wish to implement can have an impact with the budget and the schedule of the project.

8. Make sure that the contract addresses everything about the project. The contract must include factors like: timetable for the project, the cost and payment schedule, specifications for all products and materials, permit information, change management rules, and details such as access to your home, care for the home, clean up and trash removal.

9. Make sure that you get a Lien Waiver from your contractor when the work is finished. This form states that your payment responsibilities with your contractor are completed.
